Reece George
Born 1967, Perth, Western Australia
Reece George is a contemporary painter based in Woodstock, New South Wales. Though he only began painting in March 2024, his work has quickly gained recognition. His expressive, character-driven compositions blend Indigenous storytelling with a modern aesthetic, incorporating stylised animals, intricate dot work, and bold, layered textures. His work explores themes of identity, community, and connection to the land through a contemporary Indigenous lens.Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Reece employs a layering process that merges traditional dot and line work with gestural strokes, creating a distinct visual language. His limited yet striking colour palette - earthy ochres, deep blacks, and bright oranges - reinforces the cultural and emotional depth of his compositions.Despite being relatively new to painting, Reece has already developed multiple series that reflect his evolving artistic practice. His Martu Faces series portrays Indigenous figures with a blend of realism and symbolic patterns, while his Animal Dreaming series brings anthropomorphic creatures to life, weaving humour with cultural storytelling. The Connection series abstracts landscapes and figures to explore memory, belonging, and the spiritual relationship between people and place.Through his art, Reece aims to celebrate the resilience and adaptability of Indigenous culture while embracing contemporary influences. His work is held in private collections across Australia and internationally, and he continues to refine his unique artistic voice, building on both cultural tradition and personal expression. Connection to Country and Martu Heritage
My work is deeply connected to Martu Country, a land of extremes; scorching days, deep red earth, and an endless sky that has watched over my people for generations. Though I now live in Woodstock, New South Wales, my connection to the desert is unbroken. Every painting is a bridge between where I stand now and where I come from.I grew up on Beyondie Cattle Station, surrounded by the rhythms of the land and the stories of my ancestors. My Granny’s voice carried the history of our people, told through stories passed down in the cool of the verandah. These stories, woven into my childhood, are what I bring to the canvas today. The Rabbit-Proof Fence ran close to our home, a symbol of resilience and survival. My grandfather once rode its length as a boundary rider, tending to the land that sustained us. This history lives in my work, reflected in the layered textures and intricate dot work that map memories onto canvas.Collectors of my work often speak of the emotional resonance they feel in my paintings; the way the colours of the desert transport them, the way my figures and animals hold stories within their forms. My use of ochres, blacks, and deep oranges reflects the land’s natural palette, grounding my art in the same landscapes that shaped me.Whether painting Martu portraits, the cheeky humour and joy of my Animal Dreaming series, or the abstracted forms of Connection, my goal is the same, to honour the spirit of my culture while creating works that speak to a broad audience. My paintings are invitations, to see through my eyes, to feel the pulse of the land, and to connect with stories that are both deeply personal and universally human.
