Both as an artistic duo and as individual artists, they carry the legacy of their indigenous heritage and translate it onto their beautifully vibrant canvases. Damien Marks Jangala was born in Haasts Bluff and raised in nearby Papunya. Here, he grew up around many incredibly significant Indigenous artists, such as Clifford Possum, Billy Stockman and Uta Uta Tjangala. They accompanied his artistic journey from a young age and taught him how to express his ancestral Dreaming Stories through art. Yilpi Marks Atira was born in Ernabella as the daughter of well-known artists Tjulkiwa Atira-Atira and Nyukana Baker (dec) and was raised in the rich traditions of her Pitjantjatjara lineage. Damien & Yilpi’s artworks, resonating with the stories of their ancestral knowledge and inspired by the heritage of their Country, create a bridge between tradition and contemporary expression.
