Marie Pol

Marie Pol Biography

Marie Pol (b.1986) is a Sydney-based artist who creates visions and dreams that are steeped in Greco-Roman Antiquity and yet speak to the cosmopolitans of today.  Marie's work explores vulnerability and emotional exposure as essential components for creativity, belonging and empathy. Exposure to risk - being the birthplace of both courage and love - manifests in the gestural yet lyrical quality of her paintings. In her art, Marie also reflects on the distinction between representation and abstraction. She is an avid believer that within representation there are abstract ideas and vice versa. The moments of switching gears between the two are as fundamental as they are breathtaking. I often think of "building up the surface" in the same way as non-representational painters would do, however, by retaining the subject, I invite the viewer to flip back and forth between representation and abstraction, between the cosmos and the chaos. —Marie Pol   So by taking seemingly easy and familiar subjects Marie creates situations allowing to release the abstract energies. She wants the viewer to wander between reality of the scene and the reality of the painting process and in this sense she is inspired by the old masters as much as by the Abstract Expressionists. Marie has studied academic art from the prestigious Imperial Academy of Arts, St Petersburg, followed by years of experimentation and self-education. A true citizen of the world who has lived across three continents, Marie internalizes all that vast and diverse cultural experience into a unique painterly style. In her oil paintings, she elegantly fuses classical heritage with contemporary visual codes.  Marie Pol is influenced by Classical and Neoclassical sculpture as well as by the work of Rothko, Vélasquez and Bouguereau to name a few. Her style oscillates between the representation and abstraction, the sensual and the visceral, the illusionism and the textured physicality of the oil paint. Marie Pol’s paintings can be found at Wentworth Galleries in Sydney and in private collections across Australia, Belgium, China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States.  Her work is also part of the permanent collection at Copelouzos Family Art Museum, Athens, Greece.
