Conchita Carambano Biography

Conchita Carambano’s work is a continuous evolution of forms with a distinct visual language. It is the exploration of the external influences, the colours, and textures, but most importantly of the artist’s inner world. Embracing the unique colours of her adopted country, she now lives and works in Sydney exhibiting with Wentworth Gallery. Conchita Carambano was born in 1961 in Stuttgart, Germany to a Spanish family, which emigrated to Australia when she was young. Over the past thirty years, she has captured the hearts of Australian and international art lovers and collectors. Exhibiting extensively, this painter has established herself as an abstract artist revered for her unique compositions, which are regularly featured in art publications, and reviews.  A favourite amongst the creative design industries, Conchita’s inspired interpretations provoke a visceral response as the artist depicts her feelings and emotions, often aroused by her observations of nature. Her inventiveness with mixed media on canvas or paper provides a soothing, yet absorbing experience. Carambano studies the subtleties of colour, light, and form. Her works are composed in layers, constantly finding a balance between the natural behaviour of the medium and the artist’s intervention. Conchita Carambano’s gentle but powerful works have fuelled an extraordinary career that continues to gather momentum. Awards, acquisitions, civic and corporate commissions, solo exhibitions and the attention of private collectors in Australia, Asia and the Middle East punctuate Conchita’s thirty-year career. Her works can be found in significant corporate and private collections throughout Australia including St John of God Private Hospital, Perth; St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney; Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney; David Jones, Sydney, Adelaide and South Australia; Hilton Hotel, The Marriot, Hyatt, Duxton, Shangri La, Sheraton and Four Seasons Hotels throughout the country. Utilising mixed media, oil, acrylic and wax, Conchita studies her environment and draws inspiration from nature to produce engaging artworks characterised by organic forms and sensuous use of space, colour and symmetry. Her style is highly recognisable and yet profoundly enigmatic. The elegance and maturity in the abstract paintings are infused with her sense for line, form, and colour. Among others, the Australian landscape has been Carambano’s constant source of inspiration. But despite the breadth and complexity of her work, the catalyst propelling her artistic practice forward is much simpler than that. Conchita finds pleasure in feeling and understanding the quality of the media she works with. She places great importance on the moment when her paints touch the unspoiled canvas or an immaculate sheet of paper, seconds before she translates her experiences into a language of shapes and colours. Conchita’s feelings, whether they are beautiful or sad, generate a strong urge to paint. Sometimes, when she is unable to immediately turn them into brushstrokes, she purposely lets them mature in her mind, until the image takes on a new, unexpected form. Expressing what she feels on canvas is a constant dance between letting the natural behaviour of the media take its course while having complete control over the process. The results are gentle intuitive paintings, whose natural flow doesn’t cease to surprise. Sometimes, the brushstrokes flow in delicate lines which drift seductively across the canvas and sometimes are interpreted with dramatic staccato applications of colour. Conchita Carambano’s work is a continuous evolution of forms with a distinct visual language. It is the exploration of the external influences, the colours, and textures, but most importantly of the artist’s inner world. For that reason, Carambano’s works are relatable and utterly captivating.  Conchita Carambano’s extraordinarily visually pleasing works are frequently exhibited in Australia and are consistently in high demand with public and private collectors. She has also received numerous awards, and her paintings are a constant subject of international private commissions. Conchita’s colourful explorations over the past thirty years have earned her a solid reputation of an established, highly collectable artist.
