Alister Simpson Biography

 

Born in 1934 and educated in New Zealand Alister Simpson, AAEA, has been recognized as the leading equine artist in Australia for over three decades. From the age of two, Alister has always had a passion for drawing horses. He studied art in Auckland, New Zealand and London, and veterinary anatomy over a period of 4 years. He is able to capture a stunning and outstanding effect either in his oils, watercolours, gouache or pencil, whether it is an exciting racing scene, a thoroughbred in a classic pose, mares and foals in rural scenes or on the polo field. His skilled draftsmanship and great sensitivity of each work of art depicts the subtle details of the horse. Alister’s skills have earned him significant international acclaim, and he is an invited participating full member of the prestigious American Academy of Equine Art. This enables him to exhibit at the Academy, to jury for exhibitions and to teach workshops.A full time equine artist with over 30 years experience, Alister is now recognised as the leader in his field in Australia.The outstanding reputation of Alister Simpson as an Equine Artist is well known and his paintings are keenly sought after and feature in collections throughout the world. Alister undertakes commissioned assignments from clients during the year and he is the artist of choice for many of the Jockey clubs throughout the world. The Committee of the Australian Jockey Club has commissioned Alister to paint the winner of the AJC Australian Derby for 21 consecutive years and his oil painting is the trophy presented to the owners. He has also for the past 18 years been commissioned to paint the winner of the Golden Slipper Stakes for the Sydney Turf Club, the richest race in the world for two year olds. These paintings hang in the in the archives for the Sydney Turf Club and are much admired by international guests and racing enthusiasts. On 9 occasions he has been selected to paint Australias Champion Racehorse for the Victoria Racing Club. As an invited participating member of the prestigious American Academy of Equine Art, his oil and watercolour paintings are keenly sought after. With his knowledge of anatomy and his own inimitable style, he has produced an outstanding collection of works, which feature in private collections throughout the world. Commissions and awards include:Australian Jockey Club Australian Derby Winner (since 1983)Sydney Turf Club Golden Slipper winners (since 1987)Sydney Turf Club ‘Mercedes Classic Finish (since 1994)Sydney Turf Club 50th Anniversary PaintingVictoria Racing Club Australia’s Champion Racehorse (9 times)Auckland Racing Club ‘Horse of the Year’ (since 1997)NSWHRC Miracle Mile Winner (since 2002)The Honorable Ronald Arculli, Chairman of Hong Kong Jockey ClubSheik Rashid Bin Hamdan Al-NahyanSir Patrick HoganGai Waterhouse He was invited to paint the official commissions of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 at Ellerslie Racecourse Auckland (1990) and the Queen when she opened the new grandstand at Royal Randwick (1992)Also he painted the watercolour Sindebele one of the Queen Mothers horses. Recently a program of Alisters work featured on the ABC 7.30 Report. Alister exhibits at Gallery at the Wentworth, Sydney and The Osborne Fine Art Gallery, in Belgravia, London.
