Warlukurlangu Artists Biography
Established 1985Yuendumu (NT, Australia) Warlukurlangu Artists is one of the longest running and most successful art centres in Central Australia. Established in 1985, Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation is a not-for-profit organisation that is entirely Aboriginal-owned by its artists from the remote desert communities of Yuendumu and Nyirripi in Central Australia. Warlukurlangu means ‘belonging to fire’ in the local language, Warlpiri, and is named after a Dreaming site west of Yuendumu. Warlukurlangu artists first became famous for their use of bright coloured acrylic paints. In the early 2000s the artists pushed this stylistic exploration even further and have since continued to extend their technical range and contemporary influence. The art centre has a national and international profile and its art has been featured in hundreds of exhibitions and publications in Australia and around the world. The artists at Warlukurlangu paint a diverse range of subject matters. Sometimes, they tell the story of their personal connection to their Country. Other times, artists depict the features of the landscape and the flora and fauna that are found there or visual interpretations of creational stories that occurred during the Dreamtime and are handed down over countless generations.
