Corinne Ryan Biography
Date of Birth 1980Warlpiri Language Group Corinne Nampijinpa Ryan was born in 1980 in Alice Springs, but as a young woman moved to the remote community of Yuendumu, the birthplace of her husband Quentin Japangardi Granites. Here, she eventually joined the famous Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation and has been working with them as a full time artist since 2007. Having lived in Yuendumu well over twenty years, Ryan draws immense artistic inspiration from the expansive landscapes of her husband's ancestral land, a Country that she now knows intimately herself. Her artwork intricately weaves together Dreaming stories—her husband's, her mother's, and her own—reflecting the essence of her family’s Indigenous Australian Warlpiri culture. Her canvases mimic patterns and routes of the undulating sandhills that define her Country. To those initiated in cultural sacred knowledge, the paintings may also reveal hidden rockholes and natural life sources. In a minimalist black-and-white colour palette, Ryan’s stories are depicted by meticulously painting hundreds of delicate rows of dots, which seem to their audience to gently drift and flow over the surface of her mesmerising artworks. For Corinne, painting is a spiritual journey, offering tranquillity and a sense of connection to her culture and her community. When not creating, she cherishes time with loved ones, ensuring her home is a welcoming haven.
