Tarisse King Biography
Date of Birth 1986
Language Group Gurindji She is the older sister to fellow artist, Sarrita King, and daughter to the late highly regarded artist, William King Jungala (1966 - 2007). She inhereted her Gurindji and Waanji ancestry through her father, who came to public attention during the 1960s and 1970s when him and other members of the Gurindji tribe employed by the Wave Hill cattle station led a landmark case which became the first successful land rights claim in Australia. Tarisse's artistic journey is a fusion of tradition and contemporary expression. Raised amidst the rugged beauty of Darwin's Northern Territory, she relocated to Adelaide at 16. There, Tarisse honed her craft under her father's guidance, blending the lessons of the past with her own unique vision as a First Nations woman in a modern society. Drawing from her Waanyi and Gurindji roots and the spirit of her ancestral landscapes, she weaves ancient narratives with a modern flair, reflecting the enduring connection between land and culture. Tarisse's artistic skill stands out as a creative force among the new generation of First Nation artists and has garnered acclaim both nationally and internationally, with her artwork featured in prestigious exhibitions and galleries. Using a dotting technique, her artworks are colourful, captivating, yet harmonious. Today, as a mother and community member living in Aoteora (New Zealand), Tarisse remains committed to revitalising Indigenous heritage through her art. With each brushstroke, she echoes the stories of her ancestors, offering a glimpse into the soul of Australia's Indigenous landscape. ‘For me, it’s all about connecting the deep and inspiring influences of our historic culture, with the excitement and anticipation of a cohesive unified future. It’s about family, culture and strong traditional values. Educating our children with stories of our heritage and passing down the knowledge, so they can keep the home fires burning for generations to come.’
